Illusion Of Motion (The Elephant)

Soon after I moved to Prague to study at the Faculty of art, my father died. The year was 2001 and the new millennium had just started, but I was in total oblivion of my surroundings. It was not until years later that I started to scan all the images from those years, when I wanted to make a publication titled Illusion Of Motion. But I didn’t manage to get the funding and the book was cancelled. Looking at the images almost 20 years later I can almost see from which period in my life the images are taken, without recollecting the date or place. Especially significant is the months after my father passed away where the transformation of my life was transcending in my images. But as a young student I was not searching to be honest in my work, but merely trying to impress in different ways. In many ways in my life I’m relieved to understand that honesty is always preferred, and I guess this image is a proof for myself to remind me of that.

Behzad Farazollahi – born in 1978 in Teheran. Lives and works in Oslo. Behzad Farazollahi is an artist, editor and curator based in Oslo. He is the editor of the publication New Scandinavian Photography and is the director of the artist run space MELK Galleri. Farazollahi’s conceptual and exploring approach to photography is mainly based around the mediums possibilities to strengthen a physical visuality in each image using a clear and decisive method of production unique to each project. Behzad Farazollahi has exhibited in institutions such as Fotografisk Center (DK), REA Buenos Aires (AR), Kalmar Konstmuseum (SE), CCA Glasgow (SCT), Oslo Kunstforening (NO), Proud London Gallery ( UK), The Finish Museum Of Photography (FI) and Kunstnernes Hus (NO). In 2006 he won the prestigious Guardian photo prize juried by David Bailey, Nick Knight and Philip Jones Griffiths.

Niedługo po tym jak przeprowadziłem się do Pragi by studiować sztukę, mój ojciec zmarł. Był 2001 rok i właśnie zaczęło się nowe tysiąclecie, a ja tkwiłem w zapomnieniu o moim otoczeniu. Minęło kilka lat zanim zacząłem skanować zdjęcia z tego okresu. Chciałem wtedy wydać książkę zatytułowaną Iluzja ruchu. Nie udało mi się jednak uzyskać dofinansowania i publikacja nigdy nie powstała. Patrząc na te zdjęcia prawie 20 lat później, mogę określić z jakiego czasu w moim życiu pochodzą, jednak bez podawania dokładnej daty czy miejsca. Szczególnie znamienne są miesiące po śmierci ojca, kiedy przemiany w moim życiu objawiają się na moich fotografiach. Jako student, nie szukałem szczerości w zdjęciach – chciałem na różne sposoby imponować. W wielu sytuacjach w życiu, zrozumiałem, że szczerość jest zawsze cenna i ważna. Myślę, że to zdjęcie mi o tym przypomina. 

Behzad Farazollahi – urodzony w 1978 w Teheranie. Mieszka i pracuje w Oslo. Jest artystą, montażystą, kuratorem publikacji New Scandinavian Photography i artist run space MELK Galleri. Jego konceptualne i odkrywcze podejście do fotografii jest głównie oparte na możliwościach mediów do wzmacniania fizycznej wizualności każdego obrazu przez inne metody produkcji dla każdego projektu. Behzad Farazollahi wystawiał w instytucjach takich jak: Fotografisk Center (Dania), REA Buenos Aires (Argentyna), Kalmar Konstmuseum (Szwecja), CCA Glasgow (Szkocja), Oslo Kunstforening (Norwegia), Proud London Gallery (Wielka Brytania), The Finish Museum Of Photography (Finlandia) and Kunstnernes Hus (Norwegia). W 2006 zdobył prestiżową nagrodę Guardiana przyznawaną przez Davida Bailey’a, Nicka Knighta and Philipa Jonesa Griffiths’a.
