Charlotte Tegan

The reason this photograph has not been shown or exhibited is because I am unhappy with the grain.

This photograph was taken on a recent trip to Japan, where I hoped to engage in my creative photomedia practice non-stop for an entire week. I was burned out from heavy theoretical research, and needed to reinvigorate my love for the practical side of photography. The reason this photograph has not been shown or exhibited is because I am unhappy with the grain: an embarrassing reminder that sometimes I shoot compositionally before checking my lighting settings.

However, this photograph is still a personal favourite. It reminds me of the feelings involved in the process of “seeing” compositionally, and reacting to situational stimulus. I am always proud of works that are able to communicate emotional states rather than just visual ideas.

Charlotte Tegan is a PhD candidate and sessional academic at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia, currently researching Ambivalent Entanglement and the effects of digital connection and isolation on creative capacity in contemporary photomedia practice. Often working with analogue photographic methods, film, plastic cameras and experimental processes, Charlotte investigates and explores methods of seeing and viewing, and how perspectives change depending on the devices we use to view.

Pursuing a somewhat humorous and hybridised style of social documentary photography and fine art, Charlotte’s works examine the ways in which people interact with technology and artefacts, and the ways in which our digital artefacts interact with the world around us, as if with their own agency. It is through this constant reflection about our place in the world that Charlotte hopes to offer a glimmer of self-understanding through visual communication.

Zrobiłam to zdjęcie podczas ostatniej podróży do Japonii, gdzie miałam odbywać fotograficzne praktyki. Zmęczył mnie naukowy research i chciałam zająć się praktyczną stroną fotografii. Nie pokazywałam go wcześniej, ponieważ jestem niezadowolona z widocznego ziarna.

Charlotte Tegan doktorantka i studentka na Queensland University of Technology (QUT) w Australii, obecnie prowadzi research Ambivalent Entanglement i zgłębia efekty cyfrowego połączenia i izolacji we współczesnej praktyce fotograficznej. Często robi zdjęcia aparatem analogowym i plastikowymi ,,małpkami”. Eksperymentuje.
