After a year of traveling to the conflict zone, the only thing I wanted to do was to undress and lie down in a beautiful place.

In 2017 and 2018, I documented everyday life in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine. I tried to show that human life is much stronger than the war. Death lies too deep in the privacy of a man to photograph it. It’s difficult to relate to it. With everyday life, it’s different – life is relatable. I was involved with the community living close to the front line. I tried to collect funds for the renovation of the space in which they lived. Still, after I left, I couldn’t go back. I needed peace. Before going to war zones, I climbed a lot, spent a lot of time in nature. A relationship with it gives me peace and freedom. After a year of traveling to the conflict zone, the only thing I wanted to do was to undress and lie down in a beautiful place. The portrait was created on the north-eastern coast of Spain. I didn’t publish it. I just wanted to see first on myself what interests me in the human body. The human body and our relationship to nature. It was partly my reaction to death, which I had contact with during the war. After an annual break in trips to the conflict zone, I understood that I needed to carry out socially involved projects. I am interested in visual activism. The relationship with nature and people close to me allows me to get involved and continue my work as an activist / documentalist.

Jan Jurczak (b. 1996 in Krakow) is a graduate of the physical therapy programme at the University of Physical Education in Krakow (2015–2017), the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Pedagogical University of Krakow (2017–2018), and the Sputnik Photos mentorship programme (2018). In 2017 and 2018 he worked with Ukrainian communities located near the frontlines in the eastern portions of the country. He recently launched a project exploring the interactions between man and nature. In 2019 his work was shown on ShowOFF Section exhibition – part of Krakow Photomonth main programme, and in Poznan PIX.HOUSE Gallery. Has loved climbing with his friends since childhood.

Relacja z nią daje mi spokój i wolność. Nie publikowałem go. Ciało i nasza relacja do natury.
