Natalia Poniatowska

I like to think that the boy came on to the father’s arms through those two green steps.

Somehow it always comes out that the figures on my photographs are turned backwards. I avoid portraiture, I can avoid the contact and I can’t explain why. I captured this moment on the Kos island, on the way back from thermal baths. I believe that the meaning of the picture depends on the viewer’s perception of it. I like to think that the boy came on to the father’s arms through those two green steps. I also like how they create one tall figure. The photograph also brings back memories of warm Greek evenings that I really miss.

Natalia Poniatowska (1993), graduate from Fine Art Photography at the Glasgow School of Art. Born in the industrial realm of the Silesian region in the Southern part of Poland. Natalia displayed her works in various locations (Royal Scottish Academy -Edinburgh, 12 Star Gallery – London, ARCHIP -Prague, citizenM -Glasgow, House For An Art Lovers – Glasgow, Orms in Cape Town and received the British Journal of Photography breakthrough award 2017 and DEBUTS 2018. Swinging between the digital and analogue photography, still and moving image – Poniatowska explores the potential ground that exists in between of fine art and documentary photography. Drawing inspiration from the great interest in the modern, dynamic art scene but also from her personal experiences, she believes in a great power of the image in conveying emotions, truths and challenges of the modern reality. Having spent majority of her life away from her motherland, Natalia often comes back to the theme of homesickness and belonging in her art work. By using a single lens, the closest to the human perception, Natalia invites the viewer into a striking realist environment in which, the transient moment is captured to anchor the present into the realm of memory.

Natalia pracuje z fotografia cyfrową i analogową, obrazem nieruchomym i ruchomym.
