When I got invited to this project, this image quickly came to my mind. It comes from a series made in winter in 2015 in Zagreb, where I’ve spent one month exploring the numerous backyards. I finally didn’t do anything with the pictures because the light was not that good in January when I took the photos, and I’ve started other projects. This unique picture was taken during the night, one of the last days I was in Zagreb. I think it’s most interesting and I treat it as kind of a conclusion to this series which never came out.

When I was taking this image, it immediately remembered me of one of the Tintin album I was reading when I was a child, Le Lotus Bleu – in English The Blue Lotus. My memories were blurred and in reality, the house doesn’t really look the same in the comics. But in my imagination, it still does.

François Vermot (1987) – Self-taught cinematographer and photographer. He captured his first images at the age of 12 with the family camcorder. While studying geography at the University of Fribourg, he produced his first documentaries – portraits with a particular sensitivity to the places where the people he filmed used to live. In parallel, he developed a passion for photography and light, observing what happens when nothing is happening. He regularly leaves his everyday life for a month or more, voluntarily losing himself in a new town, recreating his life for a time, somewhere different. In this way, he has developed works that pay homage to the ordinariness of a place, to the banality of reality.

Gdy zostałem zaproszony do tego projektu, od razu pomyślałem o tym zdjęciu. To zdjęcie od razu przyszło mi do głowy Pochodzi z projektu, który zacząłem zimą 2015 roku, w Zagrzebiu, gdzie spędziłem miesiąc zwiedzając liczne podwórka. W nie wykorzystałem tych zdjęć, ponieważ nie odpowiadało mi styczniowe światło i zająłem się innymi projektami. To wyjątkowe zdjęcie zostałozrobione w nocy, podczas jedenego z ostatnich dni w Zagrzebiu. Okazało się najbardziej interesującym zdjęciem, kwintesencją serii, która nigdy nie powstała.

Kiedy robiłem to zdjęcie, od razu przypomniał mi się jeden z komisów Tintina, który czytałem jako dziecko: Le Lotus Bleu (eng. The Blue Lotus). Moje wspomnienia były mgliste i w rzeczywistości dom nie wygląda jak w komiksach. Ale w mojej wyobraźni i tak nim pozostanie.

François Vermot (1987) – Fotograf-samouk. Pierwsze zdjęcia zrobił aparatem rodzinnym w wieku 12 lat. Studiując geografię na Uniwersytecie we Fryburgu, wyprodukował swoje pierwsze projekty dokumentalne. Były to głównie portrety i fotografie miejsc, w których ci ludzie żyli. Równolegle rozwijał pasję do fotografii i światła, obserwując, co się dzieje, gdy nic się nie dzieje. Regularnie wyłamuje się z codziennego życia na miesiąc lub dłużej. Gubi się w nowym mieście i wiedzie swoje życie przez jakiś czas w nowym miejscu. W ten sposób stowrzył prace, które składają hołd zwykłym miejscom, banałowi rzeczywistości.
