This is a photograph I made at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley in May of 1985. There was a big event for Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday to celebrate a military victory. I brought my Rolleiflex and photographed the dancers. Each couple had their own story. You can feel the excitement, the tension, the desire in their interaction. In this photo, I see two young, innocent, college students whose future is bright. To be enrolled at UC Berkeley is a big accomplishment. During this time in the 1980s, I was photographing various political events in San Francisco as well as the general street life there. (I will publish these photographs in a book titled Public Matters with Mack this fall).

This photo was made in Berkeley rather than San Francisco so I did not include it in the final edition. I never showed or published this photograph, along with all the others in the upcoming book, also because I was consumed by other projects. I photographed a family in Managua who was very involved in the Nicaraguan civil war in the 1980s. After I finished that series I moved on to another series called Housebound about raising my family.

Janet Delaney’s photographic work explores the line between documentary and fine art. She uses the camera to investigate how politics affect urban life. In 2013 she published South of Market 1978-1986 with Mack Books. This series, which documented the impact of gentrification on a working-class neighbourhood in San Francisco, was featured in a one-person show at de Young Museum in San Francisco in 2015.

Delaney has received numerous awards, most notably three National Endowment for the Arts Grants. Her photographs are in collections such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the de Young Museum and the Pilara Foundation. She has shown her photographs nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions.

Janet Delaney received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and taught fine art photography at the University of California, Berkeley for ten years. She is represented by Euqinom Gallery in San Francisco.

Zrobiłam to zdjęcie w Teatrze Greckim na Uniwersytecie Kalifornijskim w Berkeley, w maju 1985 roku. Odbywały się tam uroczystości Cinco de Mayo, upamiętniające zwycięstwo meksykańskich wojsk. Przyniosłam Rolleiflex i fotografowałem tancerzy. Każda para miała swoją historię. Obserwując ich interakcje, widziałam podekscytowanie, napięcie i pożądanie. W tym czasie, w latach 80., fotografowałam wydarzenia polityczne i życie uliczne w San Francisco (publikuję zdjęcia z tej serii w książce Public Matters, która będzie miała premierę na jesieni).

Nie uwzględniłam tego zdjęcia w ostatecznym wyborze, bo zostało zrobione w Berkley, a nie w San Francisco. Nigdy nie pokazywałam tej fotografii, również dlatego, że pochłonęły mnie inne projekty. Fotografowałam rodzinę w Managui, zaangażowaną w wojnę domową w Nikaragui, w latach 80. Potem zajęłam się projektem o nazwie Housebound, który opowiadał o wychowaniu mojej rodziny.
